Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Facility at EWN

Client: Coastal Carolina Regional Airport Authority
Architect: The Wilson Group
Key Consultant: Talbert & Bright

The new Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Facility (ARFF) building at the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport is a consolidated facility for emergency equipment and personnel serving the airport.  It is comprised of two main components: a two-bay Apparatus Bay housing fire fighting vehicles and equipment, as well as a support facility with offices, dorm rooms, training spaces, and a watch/alarm room.  The building programming is consistent with FAA guidelines and has been tailored to the needs of the Airport while allowing for flexibility and future growth.  Located immediately adjacent to the terminal, its proximity allows for ease of access between the two facilities and provides direct access to the Air Carrier Apron and Runway.

This project sought to incorporate cutting edge trends in building systems and technology.  These systems include:

  • High-speed, glazed folding doors serving the Apparatus Bay
  • Hurricane-rated fenestrations to accommodate a high wind speed area
  • Energy Efficient LED lighting
  • Automated Lighting Controls
  • Natural Gas Generator with Automatic Transfer switch with Full Building Backup
  • Variable speed condensing furnace with 2-speed condensing unit
  • Infrared gas radiant heat
  • Apparatus Bay Air Scrubber system, utilizing 4 stages of filtration, with vehicle transmitter for scrubber activation
  • Surveillance and access control integrated onto the same platform to provide a holistic secure facility
  • State of the art high definition camera points and surveillance system with mobile access
  • Latest access control system technology with two-factor authentication to secure both the building, Air Operations Area (AOA) and SIDA access
  • Secure access to entry locations with HD video-based intercom stations
  • Technology-rich multi-purpose training center with HD displays, Wi-Fi and wired locations for training stations and learning
  • Category 6 structured cabling system with Wi-Fi access throughout the facility
  • Technology-friendly dorm space with wireless access, TV and intercom
